As the following close ups reveal some millipedes do look like prehistoric monsters. The species depicted can be found hibernating till deep in April. It is very challenging to wake this insect up from its winter sleep. The millipede species you can see on this page awake much earlier in spring time. The white creature in the lowest photo on this page might look like a totally different species but is is not! This animal has just moulted and slowly the right colour will appear.
