Xylotrechus antilope

Xylotrechus antilope has no name in English. Measuring 7-14mm it is a relatively small to medium size longhorn beetle with wasp-like black and yellow appearence. It resembles Clytus arietis but with slightly less yellow markings near the neck.

This longhorn beetle has preference for foresty areas with mostly oaks and occasionally in beech trees. Its distribution is Europe, Caucasus, Transcaucasia, North Africa, Near East, Iran. In the Netherlands this is an extremely rare species but luckily your Gardensafari photographer has found one and can show you it on this website.

Larvae feed under the bark and in the dead wood of branches and trunks. Life-cycle is 2 years with pupation in spring in the wood or in the bark. It's flying season is June-July.
